QuickBase is used across many different industries for a myriad use cases. In fact, our Customer Success Managers often say: "Companies I would have never imagined working with use QuickBase: from egg producers to pop culture magazines". At EMPOWER2017 we will have the pleasure of welcoming to stage Matthew Espie, an Environmental Protection Specialist, with the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) for the Government of the District of Columbia. Matt will share a creative and inspiring use case during his session "Protecting the Rivers of the Nation’s Capital with the QuickBase-Powered Stormwater Database.”

"DOEE's mission is to improve the quality of life for the residents and natural inhabitants of the nation’s capital by protecting and restoring the environment,” he explains. "For years, DOEE had struggled with developing a database to manage its many stormwater management programs, but after pursuing in-house database development with QuickBase, we found that we were able to achieve our database goals."

The QuickBase application that DOEE developed, the Stormwater Database, actually began as an interim solution while DOEE was looking for permanent solution to handle the complexities of its stormwater management programs. After seeing how effectively the interim QuickBase solution was meeting their needs, Matthew and his team realized that in-house QuickBase development was the answer to the database problem. DOEE found that QuickBase was easy to use, allowing non-technical program staff to design and build a complex database without relying on contracted assistance.

“Through the QuickBase-powered Stormwater Database, DOEE has made enormous improvements in data quality, streamlined participation in its stormwater programs, and is better able to anticipate how these programs will work to restore the District’s water bodies. In short, having a robust database allows DOEE to achieve real benefits for District residents and improve water quality in the nation’s capital,” Matthew explains. The Stormwater Database has enabled the coordination of various stormwater management programs, improved customer service and efficiency, improved strategic planning and program evaluation, and provides better reporting to environmental stakeholders and decision-makers.

“If organizations take an approach like ours, they may avoid spending a significant amount of money on a solution that doesn’t meet their needs or is not able to adapt to changing requirements,” Matthew says. “We were able to learn on-the-go and quickly build the database we use to implement and track our programs.”

After building their database, DOEE decided to further expand the database’s capabilities by working with QuickBase Solution Provider (QSP), a certified partner firm that specializes in helping QuickBase customers create complex custom applications.

"Working with a QSP, we implemented several customized features including verification of spatial data, a custom user interface, and custom reporting options,” summarizes Matthew.

Matt highlights that the QSP enhancements to the Stormwater Database were built to maintain DOEE’s flexibility to make in-house updates to meet fluctuating data and workflow needs.

"I’m excited to share my experience with the Stormwater Database and talk about the success we’ve had using QuickBase. I also want to learn tips from other developers that might help us to enhance our system" says Matt.  We at QuickBase are just as excited to hear more about this important project and how our product is improving the lives of people in the D.C area.
