Today millions of people around the world are celebrating Pi Day. To some, Pi is remembered by how Mr. Spock stopped an evil entity that had taken over the Enterprise’s computer system, ordering it to “compute to the last digit the value of Pi.” To others, Pi is a Greek letter in their fraternity or sorority. But the number **π** is in this case the mathematical constant, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately equal to 3.14159.

Did you know the House of Representatives passed House Resolution 224 in 2009, designating March 14 as National Pi Day in the United States? Not sure why we don’t get the day off either.

According to a USA Today article, The resolution “encourages schools and educators to observe the day with appropriate activities that teach students about Pi and engage them about the study of mathematics.”

There are plenty of articles discussing how to celebrate Pi Day, from walking or running 3.14 miles, after eating your pie of course, to memorizing pie out to as many decimals as possible (before you get too excited, the record was achieved by Chao Lu (China) who recited Pi from memory to 67,890 places).

Today, let’s just review some good ‘ol Pi jokes and interesting thoughts on the concept, shall we?

Funny? Well, Pi is in the eye of the beholder (just ask anyone who lost a Pi memorizing contest). Yet some still question Pi. “Pi as a concept is a terrible mistake that has gone uncorrected for thousands of years.” View the video below to learn why.
