Our first ever QuickBase App-a-thon was successfully held during the Pre-Conference of EMPOWER2016 and it was a great success! We had over 50 competitors building apps for two different use cases, including a non-profit QuickBase customer, and we awarded $3,000 to each of the winning teams.
Building off of last year’s success and incorporating feedback from the participants, this year’s App-a-thon* is set to be bigger and even better, but the challenge remains the same: learn the use case at 8am on Monday, May 22, work with your team for 6 hours to build an app that solves for the use case, and have fun along the way!
Judging will take place in 2 phases, and the winners will be announced at the Offsite Party on Wednesday May 24. You might just walk away with an oversized novelty check for $5,000!
We reached out to Cyril Cohen of Cyril’s Foods to share his experience from last year’s App-a-thon and to hear what he’s looking forward to at this year’s competition.
How do you use QuickBase?
We use QuickBase as a mission critical application that runs our entire operation. It manages purchasing, selling, logistics, product management, and customer proposals. QuickBase is responsible for everything but accounting.
Why did you decide to compete in the App-a-thon?
Building apps on QuickBase is fun!
We have this awesome one-day competition with people who speak the same ‘language’ as I do. We get to consult with each other and prepare an application that helps a non-profit agency.
To me, that is amazing!
Have you participated in any other Hack-a-thons in the past?
No. This is my first one. I thought I was going to bomb. However, I ended up on a team with people who have exceptional skills with QuickBase, and we each had our own forte.
How did you divide up the app-building among your team?
Before the event, we had a conversation and asked each other what we are good at. My forte was schematic. Before we start the application, it is important to understand on paper what we are designing. Once the schematic was done, we divvied up the tasks.
How would you describe the problem you solved for?
It was a for a nonprofit agency that needed an app.
Having access to the client during the App-a-thon and asking questions was crucial. The client came over and we interviewed them. You cannot get all the information from the case notes. In the effort to make this application useful, the process needs to mimic real life scenarios. When trying to resolve the case, they told us we were asking all the right questions; questions they had never thought through themselves. For example, we asked “This relationship will ‘never’, connect to this relationship or do you mean it may ‘sometimes’ connect to this relationship?” because when we design there is a big difference between ‘never’ and ‘sometimes’. It helped the client think down the road what could happen, which allowed them to have an application they could use for many years to come.
Will you be competing in the 2017 App-a-thon?
Absolutely. I would not miss it for the world.
What type of problem would you LOVE to build an app for?
CRMs would be fun. I’m actually in the process of building a CRM. It’s one of the only things I am missing in my very complex environment. It would be interesting to see all the different ways people design CRMs.
What else are you looking forward to at EMPOWER2017?
Meeting the gang. Not only is it in my favorite city in the world, but it’s always a pleasure to meet everyone at the QuickBase team, and to see what other QuickBase users are doing.
